When I moved to Seymour in 2017, the nearest bookstore was half an hour away, and my favorites were at least an hour’s drive. Now I’m even farther out in the countryside, but I have three favorite brick-and-mortar bookstores within 20 minutes of me, and one local online and pop-up shop!
I struggle to decide which to support at any given time, and it’s a problem I wouldn’t trade for anything. These favorites are Viewpoint Books, Lores Untold, Magic of Books, and Riddled with Ink.
Lores Untold opened in the small town of North Vernon, Indiana in 2024, and it’s fantastic! I treated myself to a visit on my birthday, and I was delightfully impressed. It’s off the beaten path in a remodeled from an off-white 1800s farmhouse across from the train tracks on West O & M Avenue. Go right in through the side door; it’s charming, tidy, and full of books that are in-demand.

They sell both used and new books, and the new selection is particularly fantastic - lots of rare and popular BookTok and romance novels that are hard to find in this area. I was excited to find a couple of books by local authors that I had been wishing for, including Rush of Ravens by local author Abigail Brier. It was even signed.
The children’s section has a room of its own, which I think is great for safety and privacy. There are even some toys they can play with!

The owner, Cassie, is a delight. On my most recent visit, I got to the counter and realized my credit card had fallen out of my wallet! She was very patient and she was able to send me a link. It was kind of her to work with me!
If the books you want are out of stock, they can order them in. If thrift shopping is also your thing, one room contains book paraphernalia, some clothes and beauty products, jewelry, and knicknacks. I bought a placeholder wedding ring to wear while mine is missing–we’re gonna have to go after the yard with a metal detector.
She’s hosting a special scavenger hunt in honor of Independent Bookstore Day. Prizes include bookstore vouchers, bookmarks, and more! I forgot to snap a picture with the shopfront, but here’s a picture of the scavenger hunt. Find their Facebook event here!

Lores Untold is open Wednesday through Friday from 10am to 6pm and Saturdays from 10am to 2pm. On Saturday the 26th, for Independent Bookstore Day, they will be open until 5pm!
