I bought my copy of Borders Bridges Belonging from my local bookstore Viewpoint Books of Columbus, Indiana, which features in the story, itself.
Premlata was born in India, in a time of generational trauma from the division of Indiana and Pakistan. Her family copes with poverty in a culture where women are harshly undervalued. Forced to watch her friends married off as preteens, she gets the opportunity to continue her education and rise through the worlds of education and business in an inspiring multinational journey.
It's evident in her writing that she credits her family support and her father’s freethinking with her success. The first portion of the book is her family’s history, which is admittedly denser – but her love of her family and legacy shines through, and her rise looks all the more astronomical against the backdrop. Figures such as her [] bring the story into focus, showing how the seeds of change are planted and take root. I devoured the second half of the book in an evening.
As a proofreader and copyedit, I can’t claim it’s perfect – but any arguable errors create an authenticity I would not disrupt. I am in awe of this story. Gorgeous, heartwarming, compelling. It’s the kind of story that grows your mind and heart.
Please find it at Viewpoint Books or on Amazon!
